Mike on the Red Carpet

Mike Knight, his wife Sadaf and I were standing on a red carpet with a huge video camera shoved up to our face. We were trying to get into a party that my friend DJ Rekha was spinning at. Except, they wouldn’t let us go into the party without being asked a few questions first.

“What do you think of Sundance so far?” the reporter man asked with a microphone shoved up into Mike’s face.

“Uh, it’s fine…” Mike answered for us. The whole set up seemed rather artificial and it was odd to think that we were actually being asked questions on the red carpet.

“And you are at this party tonight to support independent films. What do you think of that?” he asked again.

“What do you mean?”

“How do you feel about funding of independent films?” the reporter rephrased.

Mike paused a second before responding with, “If you have the freedom to be what you are, someone will pay your way.”

“Thank you…” the reporter responded.

As we walked away, Mike said softly said to us both, “I think that was a John Updike quote that I just said.”
