The sign said, “Saints and Sinners. A members only club.” I looked on sketchily. The establishment looked ridiculously shady and I wondered if the SLC Taqwacore show was being held at a strip club. I had driven with the bands in their van the hour out to Salt Lake City for the last show on their tour. Inside the bar was far less shady, even though there was a stripper pole by the drumset and dildos as prizes in the arcade machine. Turns out that for the past 40 years, to drink at a bar in the Mormon state of Utah, you had to fill out an application and pay a fee drink at a bar. The law was tossed out last summer.
